Job Description:
Scope and Accountabilities:
Inclusion NWT is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Act of the Northwest Territories and a registered charity under the Federal Income Tax Act. Founded in 1963, it provides a variety of programs and services for persons with intellectual or other disabilities, as well as their families. Today, Inclusion NWT is directed by a volunteer Board of Directors and employs about 120 full- and part-time staff as well as many casual employees who provide services in six different service areas. Services range from supported & independent living to education supports, to employment opportunities and supports, to peer groups and community activities.
Inclusion NWT’s annual operating budget is approximately $4.5 million plus variable donations. It holds approximately $1.3 million in capital assets, at cost, and approximately $800,000 in investments.
Inclusion NWT is a member of Inclusion Canada, a national federation with 420 associations in all provinces and territories.
Reporting to the President and accountable to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures the smooth operation of all Inclusion NWT business, programs and services. This includes the appointment of, and delegation to, program managers and supporting staff, the execution of the fiduciary duties of a non-profit organization, the compliance with municipal, territorial and federal requirements, and the management of current and potential funding opportunities.
Positions reporting directly to the Executive Director are; Manager Supported Living, Manager Skills Training and Supported Employment, Manager Employment Services and Employability, Manager Respite Services, and Manager Finance and Human Resources.
This position requires an understanding of Inclusion NWT’s mission and an ability to communicate and advocate an inspired vision of inclusion in all parts of an individual’s life.
Key challenges for the organization and its Executive Director include; government funding not keeping pace with inflation, aging infrastructure, client needs greater and more varied than currently supported through government funded programs, and employee recruitment and retention.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The Executive Director is accountable for the management and administration of Inclusion NWT’s programs, services and activities offered for the benefit of clients with intellectual & other disabilities and their families.
2. The Executive Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
Developing, directing and monitoring services to individuals and families,
Develop an annual operating plan and budget for approval by the Board,
Financial planning, monitoring and control,
Facilitate effective, efficient and economical management and administration of the Association and its services,
Ensure that adequate management, risk assessment, financial, human resource, administration and communication systems, policies and procedures are in place and being maintained,
Provide leadership and direction to the management team and staff and promoting staff development,
Assist the Board in the management of the Association in accordance with the Societies Act, bylaws, policies and other governance documents,
Assist the Board in the development, monitoring and execution of a strategic plan,
Develop funding and other proposals in support of the Association,
Advocacy,
Submit proposals to Federal and Territorial Governments and private foundations for program development, delivery and funding;
Discuss program and funding matters with senior officials of the above-noted organizations and agencies – typically Deputy Ministers, Chief Executive Officers and Executive Directors;
Public awareness and education,
Provide consultation services to other organizations and interest groups,
Research into intellectual and other disabilities,
Attend national Inclusion Canada meetings and maintain ongoing contact by phone and written correspondence,
Participate in relevant workshops and interagency committees aimed at furthering the Association’s mandate, and
Perform other duties as directed by the Board or as otherwise needed.
Skills and Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have and demonstrate
Financial acumen – specifically the ability to develop a budget, monitor and report on financial matters to the board
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills,
Interpersonal and right-touch & client engagement skills,
The ability to work under pressure and adapt quickly to unforeseen situations and events,
Excellent planning and organizational skills,
The ability to lead and motivate employees at every level, and
Familiarity with social media, industry publications, and common vendors and subcontractors.
Education and Experience:
1. The successful candidate will have:
a minimum 3 years of relevant experience in senior management. Relevant experience includes leadership and accountability for budget development, monitoring and reporting and program development, delivery and monitoring.
a post-graduate degree, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA), or equivalent education and experience,
a thorough understanding of the Northwest Territories’ socio-political contexts.
2. Assets for the position include experience in:
working with and for persons with disabilities.
a non-profit organization environment, and SAGE accounting.
Compensation:
1. Inclusion NWT provides its employees with benefits including RRSP contributions, an insurance plan including health and disability benefits and leaves including vacation and sick.
2. Compensation may range from $105,000 - $135,000 and will be commensurate with experience.
